8 Lessons You Can Learn From a Job Rejection You spent ages tailoring your resume, you put your full effort into writing a top-notch cover letter and you put your most charming self forward in your job interview. Theyd be silly not to hire you on the spot, right? Unfortunately, even when you feel like youve done everything you possibly could have to land a job, it doesnt always pay off. This doesnt necessarily mean that theres anything wrong with you or youre entirely unemployable, so there is no point beating yourself up! There may just have been somebody in the running who is better suited to the role, or perhaps you didnt champion your most valuable qualities as much as you could have. Receiving a job rejection can be pretty disheartening and its tempting to give up there and then; however its better to see it as a learning opportunity. Always ask for feedback after a job interview, so you know where you may have gone wrong or how you came across in the interview, as you may be able to improve on these areas next time round. If you look at rejection in a more positive light, here are a few lessons that you can learn from it: 1) Be confident yet humble A level of confidence is certainly a good quality to demonstrate in an interview, as the interviewer wants someone who is self-assured and can communicate professionally; however there is a line to be crossed between confidence and arrogance. Dont enter the interview with the assumption that youve got it in the bag or that they would be silly not to take you on, as this kind of attitude isnt very attractive in a potential employee and you are likely to rule yourself out of the running! Be genuine and show your personality. If they then decide that you wouldnt suit the culture of their company, then trust their judgement as they could well be right and you dont want to end up in an environment that makes you unhappy. 3) Know your strengths and weaknesses In the large part, job interviews are about learning about your strengths and what you could bring the job; however it is also quite common for interviewers to quiz you about what you feel your weaknesses are, so be prepared to provide them with an answer that is honest, but you can turn into a positive. Being able to identify your weaknesses is a good thing, as it demonstrates self awareness and the motivation to improve yourself. 4) Be curious Always ask questions in a job interview. It should be a two way process, so that you can learn everything you want to know about the role and the company and it demonstrates that you are truly interested in the job. Though you will be given the opportunity to ask questions at the end, asking questions throughout the interview will show that you are listening to what your interviewer is saying and also allows you to take a bit of control over the conversation, to steer it in the direction you would like. 5) Share information that isnt on your resume If youve been invited in for an interview, they have probably already read your resume, so theres no need to repeat it word for word. They want to learn more about you and what you are capable of, so elaborate on your past experience and achievements in more detail and share specific examples and stories that they could not learn from a document. They also want to get an idea about your communication style and work ethic from your interview, so try to come across and approachable and professional. 6) See the positives in a negative situation Rather than seeing a job rejection as purely a negative experience, try to look at it in a more positive light. For example, if you were rejected on the basis that the interviewer didnt think you were a good culture fit, they may have saved you from starting a job where you would struggle to fit in. And if you were turned down based on a mistake you made, you know what to avoid in your next interview! Not every job that you interview for is going to be a good fit, so think positively and get back on the horse! Sometimes rejection is a blessing in disguise anyway! 7) Dont put all your eggs in one basket Dont just assume that the job is yours after a seemingly successful interview. You may be a good candidate, but there could always be an even better candidate competing for the job and other factors such as a decision to delay the hiring or scrap the role entirely could also lead to a rejection. So if youre looking for a new job, try not to pin all your hopes on one role and make use of the time waiting for a response by looking for other opportunities. But we are pretty good at predicting mega-trends (for example, 20 years ago we knew wed all be working with computers by 2015). So whats the mega-trend for 2030? Robots. Theyll be doing your job. But its not all bad news. For one thing, robots might be an improvement; we already know robots are better managers than people, and they will probably be better at plenty of other tasks as well. A growing workforce of robots leaves people only the most interesting jobs. Those jobs will require people who are cross-disciplinary thinkers and do not need a clear path. For example, dismantlers will be in demandfor dismantling things like healthcare, universities, and the tax code. Here are ways to start shifting your thinking so you can survive the workforce competition robots will bring. 1. Downplay networking skills. The Internet democratizes information that used to be under lock and key. It used to be that if you wanted to get access to cutting-edge ideas in technology, you needed an invitation to an exclusive conference like TED, or to attend a university like MIT. Today, TED lectures and MIT courses are available free online. Your access to knowledge only used to be limited by the scope of your network. Some organisations are highly driven and want staff who score high on ambition and drive, whereas other organisations run more as a cooperative and are looking for more cooperative employees, who are willing to sacrifice their own ideas and glory for the good of the whole team. These are extreme examples but I am sure you can see that someone who fits the first category would be frustrated in an organisation offering the second setting.Traditionally personality profiling centres around what is known as the Big Five personality traits. These are traits that have been studied for many years and have been found to be reliable to test (in other words they can be tested fairly accurately on different people and gain reliable results) and consistent in that they donât suddenly change within most peopleâs lifetimes. For example, someone who is an extrovert is not likely to change to become introvert unless they have undergone some life changing experience. The Big Five are:Extroversion â" the amount to which you like to gain energy from the outside world, integrating and sharing ideasNeuroticism/anxiety â" this aims to measure how excited or anxious you become around work tasksOpenness to experience/conformity â" this aims to measure whether you are a âcorporate beastâ or a âmaverickâAgreeableness/tender versus tough mindedness â" aims to measure the extent to which you follow others and are able to take decisions independentlyConscientiousness â" this is the amount to which you are able to focus on your work and pay attention to detail.Have a quick look through that list and think that if each one was depicted as on a line, where would you be on that line?Can you see that some jobs and some organisations might want very different types of people? Further that if the fit is not a good one, then you could find the job or workplace very stressful? For example someone with a high score in neuroticism/anxiety might find that they are driven to complete distraction by a job that relies on detail and deadlines. A person who prefers conformity at work may feel very uncomfortable in a loosely managed company that values feedback on experience rather than being given direction. An employee who has a high level of agreeableness and likes to âkeep the peaceâ may struggle when told that they are expected to get tough and make all the decisions themselves. Finally we all have differences in how much detail we put into our work, and perfectionists do not always work well wit h those that prefer a broad brush approach.These Big Five are only the beginning and most personality tests will ascertain these and many other personality factors that sit together, to give an outline of the person and provide insight for the assessors.Traditionally personality profiles were completed with a pen and paper in a test situation but now it is more likely that you will be sent a link via email and you complete the online test. There are three critical things that you need to remember:However much you are tempted, never get anyone else to complete the test for you. Be honest and complete it yourself. If your profile is contrary to the employers needs, you would not be happy there and would probably leave anyway, and further, it would be embarrassing to be asked at an interview why you answered a question in a certain way when in the other activities you behaved in a completely different way.Concentrate and complete the task in one sitting. The computer is not only registering your responses, it is counting how long you take. If you leave the test midway to have a chat or go and make a drink, your results will be flagged up as âoddâ and you will be questioned about this at the assessment centre. Neither should you be too fast â" a paper of around 120 questions should take you about 20-40 minutes to complete. If you take 10 minutes there is a danger that you have not read and considered the questions sufficiently and if you took over an hour, it may indicate that you are either not taking the test seriously (and you went off to do something else) or that perhaps you were trying to research the âright answerâ online or by asking others.There are no right or wrong answers.
